Tips for Eco Friendly Travel

Travel is a wonderful way to experience new cultures, explore new places, and create lasting memories. But as we become more aware of the impact of our actions on the environment, it’s important to practice sustainable travel and minimize our carbon footprint. Here are 10 tips for eco-friendly travel.

Choose Eco-friendly Accommodations

When choosing accommodations, look for ones that have eco-friendly initiatives like solar power, recycling programs, and water-saving measures. Many hotels and hostels are making efforts to reduce their environmental impact, so do some research and choose one that aligns with your values. You can also consider eco-lodges and glamping sites that are designed to have minimal impact on the environment.

Use public transportation or bike rentals

Instead of renting a car or taking taxis, use public transportation or rent a bike to get around. This not only reduces your carbon footprint, but it also allows you to experience your destination in a more authentic way. Many cities and towns have bike share programs or public transportation options that are affordable and convenient. Do your research first to ensure you are using a safe option.

Pack light

Packing light reduces the weight of your luggage, which in turn reduces the amount of fuel needed to transport it. Consider packing versatile clothing items that can be worn multiple times, and leave unnecessary items at home. Plus, it makes traveling more convenient and less stressful. This is the only way I travel and it has made life so easy at the airport and on trips where we move from destination to destination. My favorite bags are from Wandrd (not sponsored.)

Bring a refillable water bottle and reusable bags

Instead of buying bottled water and using plastic bags, bring a refillable water bottle and reusable bags with you. This reduces the amount of waste you produce and helps keep your destination clean. Many airports and train stations now have refillable water stations, so you can fill up your bottle before your flight or journey.

Eat locally and sustainably

Look for restaurants and cafes that use locally sourced and sustainably grown food. This supports the local economy and reduces the carbon footprint of your meals. Many destinations have farmers’ markets and street food vendors that offer fresh, local food options.

Say no to single-use plastics

Avoid using single-use plastics like straws, utensils, and cups. Bring your own reusable items or look for eco-friendly alternatives. Many restaurants and cafes now offer paper straws or biodegradable utensils, but it’s always best to come prepared with your own reusable items.

Respect local cultures and customs

Be mindful of local customs and traditions, and avoid activities that harm animals or the environment. Look for responsible and ethical animal encounters and wildlife watching tours that support conservation efforts.

Choose eco-friendly activities

Look for eco-friendly tours and activities that support conservation efforts and minimize environmental impact. This can include hiking, snorkeling, and wildlife watching. Many destinations offer ecotourism opportunities that allow you to experience the natural beauty of the area while supporting local conservation efforts.

Offset your carbon footprint

Consider offsetting your carbon footprint by donating to organizations that support conservation and renewable energy projects. You can also choose airlines and hotels that offer carbon offset programs. This allows you to mitigate the impact of your travel and support positive environmental initiatives.

Leave no trace

Finally, always leave your destination cleaner than you found it. This means packing out your trash, being mindful of your impact on the environment, and respecting the natural beauty of your surroundings. Follow designated trails and paths, and avoid disturbing wildlife or damaging natural features. By leaving no trace, you can help preserve the environment for future generations to enjoy.

Bonus Tip: If tour travel is your thing but you are not sure if it is eco-friendly, it can be. Here are a few tips on finding sustainable tours:

  • Choose responsible tour operators: Look for tour operators that have a commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism. This can include initiatives like minimizing waste, supporting local communities, and reducing carbon emissions.
  • Opt for small group tours: Larger groups can have a bigger impact on the environment and local resources. Consider choosing a smaller group tour to reduce your impact.
  • Use eco-friendly transportation: Look for tour operators that use eco-friendly transportation options like electric buses, bikes, or walking tours. This reduces the carbon footprint of your tour.
  • Support local communities: Choose tours that support local communities and economies by using local guides and staying in locally-owned accommodations. This helps to promote sustainable tourism practices and ensures that the benefits of tourism are shared with the local community.
